Jus t as it was during Hip-hop’s golden era of the late ’80s to early ’90s, the most popular rappers solidify themselves with a hit song or hit album, with the latter being defined by a project that is commercially successful and/or critically acclaimed. The first month of 2017 followed this trend, as two already popular rap groups - Rae Sremmurd and Migos - catapulted into global super-stardom instantaneously, by way of their hit singles turned viral sensations - “Black Beatles” and “Bad and Boujee.” In the past year, up-and-coming rappers have gained popularity even faster, as Lil’ Yachty, Lil’ Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black, went from no-names to the brightest stars of the genre’s new generation. Since the dawn of the social media era, we’ve seen many rappers blow up seemingly overnight - Chief Keef and Bobby Schmurda.
